In The Artists' Absence
Opening at 6:00 Monday, 13th February 2012

Seven young Belgian artists have been invited to make a show at the COLLECTIVE. Each work is to be submitted in the form of an instruction which will be interpreted and arranged by Riaan van Jaarsveldt (ZA). In addition, a Limited Edition will be presented in the form of handmade prints which were produced in collaboration with Oplage, which is based in Antwerp. Thereby each artist has had the opportunity to create a print that may or may not be part of each individual instruction piece.

The opening will include a series of performances, and interactions.

The exhibition itself will morph throughout the three week exhibition period.

Phoneography– a group exhibition for all smartphone camera users

This is an invitation to partake in this exciting project.

Taking pictures with a smartphone (or a cellphone that has a camera) has become so popular, it even has its own name: iPhoneography, or smartphoneography for those who do not own an Apple mobile phone. You have been taking a lot of cool pix on your phone and now would like others to see them besides on Instagram and other sites and have a chance to sell them in a gallery environment. Now is the time!

We want this exhibition to be of extremely high quality, creativity and originality. Use of applications and computer editing is encouraged! Whatever you do, just have fun!

To enter the exhibition you will need to make works that fit the format of 12cm x 12cm wooden blocks onto which the image(s) you will mount. These blocks are the entry fee for the exhibition and will cost R20 per block. If you are unsure of how to get the images ready and onto the blocks we will have instructions at the gallery when you pick up your block(s).

You may buy more than one block and enter more than one work. We encourage you to make this your showcase and thus use a number of blocks to create an individual theme or installation. The cost for 10 blocks is R150 and for 20 blocks is R250.

In addition, the gallery will charge a commission on sales of 20%, which is well below our regular rate. The sale price of each block is set at R100 each.

Please pick up the blocks from artSPACE durban or the COLLECTIVE from the 10^th January. Delivery of the finished works, which must be ready for hanging, is by 2nd February during gallery hours.

The exhibition dates are: 6 February – 26 February 2012.

We are looking for South African social photography(band and general debauchery), night and day. We are looking for submissions from photographers and will end up choosing about 7 or 8 photographers to participate in theexhibition. Each photographer will show between 3 - 8 pieces, depending onsize.

Grouplove is an American indie rock band which formed in 2009. I have an obsession with lyrics, and this song in particular really pulls on my heartstrings, but not in a sad way. Keanu Reeves and Russel Brand are starring in Steven Spielbergs new movie! They were at the COLLECTIVE last week....we had to hold back on the press, we didn't want any stalkers incase they decided to come back for a coffee. What a treat to see Russel in the house without Katy on his shoulder :)

AWOLNATION - Sail

AWOLNATION is a relatively new American indie/rock band. Sail Songfacts reports that Aaron Bruno, the front man, used to leave high school without saying goodbye to his friends because it was easier. This lead to him being nicknamed 'Awol' (absence without leave). When Bruno decided to form his own band, he decided to name it after his high school moniker. This is a really cool song. The Subways are a British indie/rock band formed in 2003. If I had to choose one, I would have to say that this is currently my favorite band. My flavor of the month. Or the last two months at least. "THE END (Of The World As We Know It)"

7th-26th November at the COLLECTIVE and artSPACE durban

On November 7th artSPACE durban and The COLLECTIVE open the exhibition titled: “The End (Of The World As We Know It)”. The exhibition opens on November the 7th at 6:00 p.m. in both venues and runs until November 26th.

The exhibition brings together 31 invited artists who each present one work interpreting what is an extremely difficult, thought provoking and exciting subject matter.

In the run up to this exhibition the two galleries organized evening sessions, In Session.End.Part 1, 2, and 3 (October 31) on this subject matter in which religious leaders, environmentalists, philosophers, physicists, mathematicians (to name a few) were given the opportunity to give their take on it.

The artists who have accepted the invitation to this exhibition have had to consider and develop not only a very abstract and technical matter but also a very personal and emotional one and are now faced with the challenge and burden to consciously present them to the public.

The exhibitions in the two galleries will be of extreme high quality and should not be missed.

CocoRosie is a sister band who combines opera-ish vocals and unconventional things like kids toys and such to create beautiful, unique music that kind of haunts you. This is not one of my favorite songs but the video is quite creepy and fantastic!

We will be hosting some local filmmakers comedic films, and thought we would have some fun in the process.

The tokoloshe, a mischievous evil spirit from South African folklore, is said to take on many forms. When a young man offends a sangoma, he returns home to find what could be the most unlikely incarnation of the tokoloshe ever. Funny and brimming with local flavor.

Low Caste - Mark Edwards & Pascal Bennett
Collectively titled 'Low Caste' - a play on words involving the characters of the films humourously represent the "lower end" of societies hierarchy, and on a "no budget" filmic manifesto, since the entire series cost less than R400 to make.

Goodbye Swiss friends

For the last 3months, artSPACE and theCOLLECTIVE have hosted Celia Sidler, her partner Christoph and their little boy Mito. Celia's an installation artist from Switzerland and is in South Africa till the end of Jan with Prohelvetzia (swizz arts council.) Her work's really very cool and her installations have included a giant cake or candy floss heap in a gallery space, check it out on www.celiasidler.ch
It's really great meeting new people from around the world, they really liked our gallery and spent a lot of time here with us...chilling, drinking European amounts of coffee and skyping with their friends back home. On Monday we had to say goodbye as they make their way across to Cape Town. We're gonna miss having them around and especially little Mito who's the cutest 2year old!

As you can imagine getting this shot was a bit difficult. Not all of us are looking our best but at least most of us are looking at the camera!

Freedom Posters by Mike Van Der Meer

Freedom posters is based on a visual representation of how I have interpreted each of the persons freedom or escape from the world -from traveling with no sense of direction to something as simple as bubbles. Each person in this world has some sort of a freedom and this is what links us all, people from all walks of life have some sort of escape and through these freedom posters I'm showing that each person has a different freedom.

It was originally a photographic book documenting each individual within the process of experiencing their freedom I have taken this into a new form through using posters to visually represent how different each freedom is, through the way they are depicted either illustration or digital prints.

the COLLECTIVE, for it’s first festive season, brings you an exhibition unique in its own right. The COLLECTIVE invites all interested artists to please submit their works for our final exhibition of the year titled “It’s A Wrap”.

The criteria are as follows:

All art must be original, of good quality and ready for hanging that will sell for under R1 500 (including gallery commission). All selected items will be charged our introductory price of R10 per piece and a 38% commission charged on all works sold.

On Monday this week we had our second 'The End' of the world as we know it, talk.
Our four speakers included, a walking carbon footprint calculator, a photographer, a Professor of Quantum Physics and a reverend...yes the discussions at 'the end' of their talks got quite heated! Luckily Rocko was there to sooth us into the 80ies with his awesome tunes. Thanks Rocko!

Cartooooning

On the 17th and 18th of September we hosted 13 aspiring cartoonists. Warren Raysdorf and Alastair Laird put together a great two day workshop that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Here are some pics of what went down. The end result was a fully conceptualised panel layed out on a masonite board. Lets hope we see some new names in Free Beer soon. This is it - the end of 2011. A year left to the end of 2012 and the end of everything....or is it? The current Mayan cycle and calendar end in December 2012; to some this signifies the end, and to others merely the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. What does ‘the end’ mean to you? There are two clear trends in thought; the end is either a final abandonment, or a completion. There are many different philosophies and ideas about ‘the end’ from a final void to stepping through to another level of existence.

This is a thought-provoking and exciting project. It is an opportunity to reflect on what ’the end’ means to you and then produce a work in any medium inspired by what ‘the end’ signifies for you. The works of the 25 invited artists will be hung in an exhibition titled “The End (Of The World As We Know It)" at artSPACE durban. Usually ‘the end’ scenarios are thrust into the public consciousness in a negative light. This is a chance for artists to consider and develop their ideas and then consciously present them in public space. The interpretation of “The End” theme is entirely open - it could be philosophical, economic, religious, environmental, political and more.

1. Introduction

· Introduce workshop facilitators

· Discuss Materials

· What each artist will get from this workshop

2. Spontaneous drawing

· Draw a character built out of simple shapes - circles, triangles rectangles - minimal features and rudimentary limbs are ok - basic pattern on his/her clothing

· Brainstorming exercise

· Roughly sketch the character in a few poses

· Location - some place - a setting for your character

· Draw an object, item, thing or prop - whatever comes to mind.

· Think up a verb - some kind of action for your subject

3. Individual panels

· From single panels to a multi-panel cartoon

· Combining the results of the brainstorming session into the single panel with a workable establishing shot with pencil

· Inking/tracing on a new page in work book

4. The Full Page Strip

· The creation of a full page strip by means of cutting out individual panels and placing them onto a larger backing board

· Presentation of the artworks by the artists

· Individual critique – a one on one discussion noting the challenges and successes of the artist’s final outcome

5. Conclusion

· Live art jam with Warren Raysdorf making use of the skills acquired by taking part in the workshop

· A Possible opportunity to be published

· Artworks from the art jam will be considered to be part of a future exhibition at the COLLECTIVE (dates to be announced)

From the Eyes of the Youth

The project was carried out in several stages. The first of which was

a 'getting to know you' activity. The youth kept journals and collected

images, things from nature, drawings, and words which represent

various themes we will be discussing in the meetings. The themes

revolved around words that they heard around their homes and

neighborhoods, on the radio, television, or in class and school;

people or things that make them happy to be who they are; people or

things that make them fearful; things that represent their culture;

and things that they consider to be education. Through these

exercises the youth explored their environments and critically

analyzed themselves and the world around them. Discussions revolved

around what each volunteer shares. The participants were given

digital cameras to take pictures based on the idea that their pictures

will show the beauty, pain, celebrations, and challenges of being

members of their communities and culture.

The project was conducted in three communities in KwaZulu-Natal:

Eshowe, Wentworth, and Harding. It was funded by Rotary International

organization as part of community service project by the visiting

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Fileve Palmer-Stahlman and her husband

Joseph Stahlman. both facilitators are working on the PhDs in

anthropology.

Defining Images: From Countries at Opposite Ends of our most populous Continents by Garth Lezard

A graduate photojournalist from the University of Wales, Swansea, Lezard has been shooting conceptual global photographic bodies of work since 2001.
The images on show are from his body of work titled, “Defining Images: From Countries at Opposite Ends of our most Populous Continents”. This series was captured from 2001 - 2003. This work is a tribute to his lens and 35mm film assisted inquiry. The images and text reveal some of his discoveries around photojournalism and a personal inner and wider search.
Recently Lezard completed a more concerned body of photographic work. This series titled, “Leonard Cheshire International: Home and Services, Creating Opportunities”. This series was captured from 2004 - 2010. Here Lezard visited local and many international branches of the Leonard Cheshire homes family. Whilst there Lezard photographed the people living and working there as well as the many facilities available to residents, which included sporting, cultural work opportunities for the less abled. Currently Lezard is working on a project combining his love for global travel, endurance, sport and conceptual photojournalism. The series titled, “On my Bicycle Through Four of our Most Populous Continents”, which he started in 2010, involves Lezard cycling through four countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and Central America. To date he has cycled from Durban to Harare, and most recently From Athens to Barcelona. he already has a route planned for the remaining continents and hopes to complete them as soon as possible.

SMILE by Guy Anderson

The Joy Tour 2010 was a motorcycle adventure through southern and east Africa over the course of seven months. It incorporated the unique idea of printing a portrait photo for local people that were met along the way, and giving it to them to keep. The trip has resulted in the coffee table book “SMILE!”
This exhibition showcases some of the images from the book. All other images in the book are also available for order, with a number of printing and framing options.
Below is the introduction taken from the book:

It was a common dream that brought the Joy Tour team together. Hardus Bouwer, Matt Hayter and Guy Anderson have felt the lure of African exploration for as long as they can remember.
Then finally, in June 2010, the time came to hit the road and head north. Motorcycles were the vehicles of choice, to allow flexibility in the adventure, and provide the opportunity to discover an Africa off the beaten track.
In addition to just enjoying what this continent has to offer, the team decided to incorporate a unique concept that would enable them to give something back to the local people along the way.
By carrying a portable printer on the back of his bike, Guy was able to print photographs straight from a camera while on the move. For many, it was the first time they had ever seen a photograph of themselves, and so being able to keep the print left them overjoyed, and with a happy memory to treasure for years to come.
These prints were proudly shown to neighbors and friends, or set up for display in humble homesteads. These very same photographs, which are scattered around the sub- continent, fill the pages of this book.
The inspiration for this "smile catching" came from previous travels through rural parts of Africa, during which children were unable to contain their excitement at simply seeing a photo of themselves on the screen of a digital camera. If they were so delighted with the short lived experience, then surely being a proud owner of their very own printed photograph would be even more special?
As it turned out, it was so. The Joy Tour concept proved its worth time and time again, and much more. The difficulty of carrying a printer, piles of paper, and spare ink was far outweighed at the sight of pure joy on the faces of the friends made along the way. Friendly interactions, prompted by this concept, immersed the team in the local communities, and bridged the gap between different languages, cultures and religions.
In addition to all this, the Joy Tour moulded the journey into an experience that could never have been dreamed up by the wildest of imaginations. The plan had been to complete an eight week round trip through Southern and East Africa, with Uganda set as the most northern destination and turn around point. In reality, nothing went according to this plan.
Break downs, malaria, near arrests, bike accidents and many more unforeseen incidents meant that the deadline of the trip had to be extended again and again. Hardus had to head home after nearly 3 months and Matt followed suit 3 months later. Guy thumbed his last lift home a full 7 months since the start of the trip, bike-less and broke, but with the photographs and memories to tell this story.
These memoirs are simply snippets from the full story, and the photographs are merely an insight into the smiles that inspired it all.
