5 Distinct Lessons in the art of cartooning

1. Introduction
· Introduce workshop facilitators
· Discuss Materials
· What each artist will get from this workshop
2. Spontaneous drawing
· Draw a character built out of simple shapes - circles, triangles rectangles - minimal features and rudimentary limbs are ok - basic pattern on his/her clothing
· Brainstorming exercise
· Roughly sketch the character in a few poses
· Location - some place - a setting for your character
· Draw an object, item, thing or prop - whatever comes to mind.
· Think up a verb - some kind of action for your subject
3. Individual panels
· From single panels to a multi-panel cartoon
· Combining the results of the brainstorming session into the single panel with a workable establishing shot with pencil
· Inking/tracing on a new page in work book
4. The Full Page Strip
· The creation of a full page strip by means of cutting out individual panels and placing them onto a larger backing board
· Presentation of the artworks by the artists
· Individual critique – a one on one discussion noting the challenges and successes of the artist’s final outcome
5. Conclusion
· Live art jam with Warren Raysdorf making use of the skills acquired by taking part in the workshop
· A Possible opportunity to be published
· Artworks from the art jam will be considered to be part of a future exhibition at the COLLECTIVE (dates to be announced)

Financial:
Workshop Cost: R120.00 for the two days
(This includes the materials provided at the workshop, which are then yours to take home)
